Modern Languages and Civilizations

Welcome to the Modern Languages & Civilizations Department

The LACC Modern Languages & Civilizations Department (formerly Foreign Languages) is one of the largest and strongest language departments in Southern California.

Foreign language fluency is an essential skill in the 21st century. One should speak at least two or more languages to be considered globally minded. Not only is learning another language good for personal development, but it also gives students an advantage in many careers.

Our goal is to integrate foreign language and cultural education with technology. We want to deliver courses and information anywhere and anytime with the aid of technology.

Learning a language helps us overcome cultural and social barriers. We are an outstanding group of instructors whose life-long pursuit is to teach their students other languages, other cultures and the humanities.

Join us and begin your adventure of learning about the world.

Transfer Limits - UC General Education & IGETC

The UC system allows no credit for duplication of a foreign language if the student completed the equivalent levels in high school with a grade of "C" or better.

Students may demonstrate proficiency to fulfill the Language Other Than English IGETC requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Complete two years of high school coursework in one language other than English with a grade of C or better.
  • Complete a course or courses at a college or university with a grade of C or better in each course. Any course (excluding conversation courses) considered by the college or university to be equivalent to two years of high school language may be used. Many college catalogs list the prerequisite for the second course in a language as Language 1 at this college or two years of high school language. In this case, Language 1 clears both years of the requirement.

Two years, or equivalent to the 2nd level of high school instruction, of the same language other than English are required. (Three years/3rd level of high school instruction recommended).
