Social Sciences Department
Welcome to the Social Sciences Department at Los Angeles City College. Our mission is to empower students from diverse backgrounds to develop critical thinking skills and gain insight into fundamental questions about human existence and our place in the world.
We design our curriculum with a transdisciplinary approach, recognizing that knowledge naturally crosses academic boundaries and thus are dedicated to the intellectual growth of our students through the different academic disciplines that make up the Social Sciences Department: Asian-American Studies, African-American Studies, Anthropology, Chicana/o/x Studies, History, Humanities, Political Science, Social Justice, and Sociology.
Using this approach, we strive to teach students three essential critical thinking skills (outcomes): analysis, evaluation, and inference. Students in our department gain the confidence to live richer lives so that they may transfer to universities or seek employment in their chosen careers. We combine alternative instructional methods with traditional academic approaches, providing our students with both innovative learning experiences and the rigorous traditional instruction they need to succeed in higher education.
In the Social Sciences Department at City College, we truly believe that we are doing the work of the people.

RB Scholars
The RB Scholars (RBS) program is a comprehensive year-long commitment at LACC where students complete four to five designated "honors" courses. Many classes within the Social Sciences Department provide honors sections as part of this program. Beyond coursework, RBS offers valuable opportunities for students to present their research and access specialized scholarships.
