The Visual and Media Arts Department at Los Angeles City College proudly presents This Archipelago, an exhibition featuring twenty artists from the greater Los Angeles area. Unfettered in its mutability, clay has anchored conversations in both popular and cultural consumption, serving as utilitarian wares and discursive objects. This ability to slide between the quotidian and the singular infers the irreconcilable character of the artists’ investigations in This Archipelago. Indeed, these works function as conveyances that embrace and refuse the identity of tradition inherent to this material. Approaches to shape, surface, and representation mark the decisions of these artists; a catalog of concerns that index not only formal preoccupations but map the shores of everyday life.
