Good Tuesday morning,  

I hope everyone had a restful four-day holiday weekend. This week is short but still very busy.

This afternoon we will be holding our Lunar New Year Celebration from 11:30am to 1pm in the Main Quad. The event includes Asian cuisine, gifts and traditional Asian performances.

This week we continue our celebration of Black History Month:

  • Tonight (Tuesday 2/21) “Wakanda Forever” movie night tonight at 6pm in Holmes Hall Room 6.
  • Tomorrow (Wednesday 2/22) from 12noon to 1:30pm in the Student Services Building Room 270 - a special career panel featuring Black professionals in engineering, entertainment, education, and policy-making, who will talk about their experiences. It will also be available in Zoom.
  • Thursday (2/23) we will have a Candid Convos 12:30pm to 2:30pm in the Student Union Multipurpose Room – a supportive conversation around the realties that affect the Black community and ways allies can support. 
  • The LACCD BFSA is having Black History Celebration on Thursday, February 23 at the Lavender Blue Restaurant Lounge in Inglewood at 6pm, $25 donation, register at https://laccdbfsaspring2023mixer.eventbrite.com.
  • We will round out the month with a luncheon on Tuesday, February 28 from 11:30 to 3:00 in the Student Union Multipurpose Room with artist local South LA renowned artist Michael Massenburg.

Yesterday, our new Cubby’s Closet was featured on LAist. You can read the article at: https://laist.com/news/education/los-angeles-city-college-students-open-their-own-free-clothing-store Cubby’s Closet offers students free gently used and new clothing and accessories. Located in the Student Union, 2nd floor, students can check in and pick up a free outfit once a month. Hours are Monday to Thursday, noon to 2pm. You can donate items in the ASG Office from Monday to Thursday, 10am to 6pm.

We spent a lot of time preparing for and completing items for our ACCJC (Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges) accreditation. The accreditation process assists colleges in improving institutional effectiveness to ensure colleges offer high quality educational programs and services. Our Accreditation Liaison Officer Dr. Jim Lancaster and Accreditation Faculty Co-chair Dr. Nate Lorentz  worked diligently since October responding to questions the visiting team had of LACC. A small team will visit us all day on March 1 and the morning of March 2. We will share the outcome of this visit on Wednesday afternoon. We will have a Town Hall on the accreditation visit outcome the afternoon of March 2 at 3:15 in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. We will have cookies, hot chocolate, and coffee. Please mark your calendars and join us.

Transfer Workshop: Transferring to a Private or Out of State University

There are many things to consider when transferring. But transferring to a private or out-of-state institution adds a different dimension. There are no articulation agreements, there may be non-resident tuition, there are different application deadlines, different applications, etc. If you are considering any of these institutions, attend this session. Lunar New Year Celebration

11:30pm to 1pm

Main Quad

Celebrate Lunar New Year with us!  This free event will offer a day of Asian arts and music, traditional performances, games and food. Event goers will learn about the meaning behind Lunar New Year.  The event will include special performances from Nori: A Traditional Korean Percussion Group and Isaku Kageyma and other Taiko drum performers. Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to attend.
