This Week @ City - February 6, 2023

February 6, 2023

Good Monday morning,

Welcome to Spring Semester! Welcome back to LACC! This week kicks off Welcome Week and we will be offering extended hours in many Student Service Offices both in-person and online. Monday through Thursday, most offices will be open 8am to 7pm and Friday from 8am to 4pm. Our special Saturday hours on February 11 will be 9am to 1pm. Available services include Admissions & Records, Bookstore, Business Office, Counseling, EOPS, Financial Aid, Non-credit and Adult Education, and our Welcome Center.  We still need volunteers to assist our Outreach Team this week, please email Daniel Hernandez-Uribe at @email to find out about volunteering. If you are not too busy this week, please join us to help.

Thank you to everyone who put together and attended last Thursday’s Faculty Symposium. Chancellor Rodriguez updated us on the presidential search, which will begin this week. Indeed – change is in the air!

Our Lunar New Year Celebration was a big hit and it was great to see everyone enjoy delicious food and socialize. Thanks to Mickey Hong and our APIDA group for organizing such a fun event.

The ASG is having a grand opening of Cubby’s Closet today at noon on the 2nd floor of the Student Union. It is a beautiful area for students to peruse to find slightly used clothing. If you or someone you know has some nice things to give to our very appreciative students, please drop the clothing off at the ASG – 2nd floor Student Union.

Registration is in full swing for spring classes. Students can visit the Welcome Center for assistance and find classes at: https://www.lacitycollege.edu/academics/class-schedules. Please be sure to reach out to your students to make sure they register for spring classes.

To celebrate Black History Month we have some events including a screening of the true story of Warrior Women and a Wakanda Forever movie night, along with a luncheon with artist Michael Massenburg. More details coming soon.

We spent a lot of time preparing for and completing items for our  ACCJC (Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges) accreditation.  The accreditation process assists colleges in improving institutional effectiveness to ensure colleges offer high quality educational programs and services. A small team will visit us all day on March 1 and the morning of March 2. We will share the outcome of this visit and the affirmation for accreditation process.  We will have a Town Hall on the accreditation visit outcome the afternoon of March 2. Please mark your calendars – we will have light refreshments.
