Dr. Ronald F. Levant Scholarship

Dr. Ronald F. Levant, an esteemed alumnus of Los Angeles City College, is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in the psychology of men and masculinities. As a former President of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2005, he has significantly influenced the field through his research, leadership, and advocacy.

Dr. Levant's academic journey includes a Doctor of Education in Clinical Psychology and Public Practice from Harvard University, a Master of Business Administration from Boston University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. His academic appointments have spanned prestigious institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Rutgers University, Nova Southeastern University, and the University of Akron, where he holds the title of Professor Emeritus. 

 

Dr. Ronald F Levant

A central figure in establishing the psychology of men and masculinities, Dr. Levant developed the "Normative Male Alexithymia" hypothesis, addressing the challenges men face in expressing emotions. He also introduced the Alexithymia Reduction Treatment (ART), a therapeutic approach aimed at helping men engage more effectively in psychotherapy. His prolific scholarship includes over 300 publications, with notable works such as The Psychology of Men and Masculinities and The Tough Standard: The Hard Truths About Masculinity and Violence, the latter earning the William James Book Award from APA Division 1 in 2021. 

The Los Angeles City College Foundation 

The LACC Foundation fosters philanthropic support to enhance educational opportunities and outcomes for students at Los Angeles City College. With the generous support from Dr. Levant himself, the Los Angeles City College Foundation established the Dr. Ronald F. Levant Scholarship to support aspiring students pursue their educational goals. This scholarship assists students pursuing studies in psychology or social sciences, reflecting Dr. Levant's enduring commitment to education and the advancement of psychological science. Each semester 6 students are selected as recipients of this distinguished award.
